Nobel Prize To “The Messiah”

obama-hopeBarack Obama has just won the Nobel peace prize. The text book idealism and flowery speeches trumped rewarding accomplishments. Obama has sprung from small playing fields to the savior of the world in just a couple of years.

Having held the President’s office for less than a year, the famously inspirational Obama, hasn’t accomplished anything. Obviously he hasn’t exactly had time to finish any of the extremely ambitious plans he has. Commentators say this is a peace prize given to encourage Obama in the direction he has taken.

Barack Obama is very un-American in his thinking and thus conservative Americans doubt his every intention. Instead he is very much a liberal after Europe’s heart. Europeans don’t understand the American idealism that leads to wars and Americans  find European socialism and big government incomprehensible. So it makes complete sense that the Norwegian Nobel committee would encourage a US president, who finally sees the world through the same lens as the Europeans.

The world has been looking to Barack Obama as the solution.  In a world void of hope, people see hope in him. He has already been given golden keys to do as he pleases, because the world trusts him. This Nobel prize has placed further expectations and pressures on Obama’s inexperienced shoulders. I find it incredible how one man is expected to right the world from all wrongs, starting from climate change to national health care and nuclear disarmament.

I hope he will be able to live up to it.

The Other Obama

So, change has come to America. Or has it? Maybe it’s not as radical as promised, maybe it is just a careful return to that what was. Remember the Clintons?

Obama made some daring promises during the two years of presidential campaigning. Those comments meant  hope to some and the end of the world to others. One of the earlier promises was to meet with leaders of “rogue states” (ie Iran, North Korea) without conditions. Now that promise is being re-defined cautiously. It is  time to turn the liberal promises into careful action.

Obama’s un-tainted persona and fresh take on things appealed to Americans (and the world) with such strength that people came out of the woodwork to vote. I think it is interesting how he is surrounding himself now with the same old Washington faces from the Clinton-era. (Which makes sense, especially since he is as un-experienced as he is.)

All this to say that maybe he won’t be so radically different after all. The reality of the White House is that, it’s not just about the President. It’s about who he brings with him.

I respect Obama for his ability to communicate in a way that makes you feel like he understands you, all the while having already made up his mind about what he’s going to do. The very same ability also scares me.

The Next Savior?

America has elected its 44th president. People were very emotional last night as the results came in. The joy and the tears spoke about the very high expectations people have for President Obama. People are tired and want to see complete change. They hope Obama will be their savior, their messiah; the anointed one.

People are always looking for a savior. One thing we all agree on is that our world is in turmoil and we need a way out. In this case Barack Obama is the way out to many people.

I think it is very curious how many hopes have been placed on his shoulders. He really is a superstar in popularity and savior in expectations (in many ways so, because he hasn’t had the chance to fail yet). I am afraid the hopes people have for Obama are quite un-realistic. After all he is not the savior, only God has the ability for that position.

God gives authority to people and it is now our responsibility to pray for President Obama and see what God will do and allow to happen through his presidency.  America has definitely taken a giant step towards the liberal policies of Europe.
